John James Revealed: As Supreme Court Protects LGBTQ+ Rights, Reminder That John James Has Campaigned Against Marriage Equality

Yesterday, the Supreme Court affirmed the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans. But failed politician John James has tried to stand in the way of progress by promising to confirm far-right judges who pose a threat to equality, and refusing to support legal protections against discrimination. James’ failed record also includes campaigning against marriage equality – telling supporters that he believes in “marriage being between one woman and one man” as recently as 2018.

And with Mike Pence set to come to Michigan this week, James has been in lockstep with the Vice President’s long standing record of hostility toward LGBTQ+ Americans. James’ donations from anti-LGBTQ+ rights groups like the Family Research Council and billionaire GOP mega donor Dick Uihlein also make clear that they know he’d be a reliable vote against equality for all Michiganders.

“John James is ‘all for’ the Trump Administration’s agenda, even when it’s hostile to LGBTQ+ Michiganders,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “James’ far-right record of refusing to stand up for equality and legal protections for all Americans may work for Pence and Washington Republicans, but it’s wrong for Michigan.”

The Michigan Democratic Party launched to hold the failed U.S. Senate candidate accountable for his positions – including those made over the course of the 2018 campaign that he then tried to delete after losing that campaign. Since announcing he’d run again, just over six months after his last failed bid, James has been hiding from Michigan voters and refusing to answer questions from Michigan media.
