John James Revealed: ICYMI: James’ Ex-Aide’s Dark Money Group Under Fire Amid New FEC Complaint Calling for Investigation into Illegal Coordination

New reports show even more overlap between James campaign and pro-James dark money group, prompting calls for investigation

In case you missed it, this week a new complaint filed by the Michigan Democratic Party has further exposed “shady, cozy” coordination between the dark money group “Better Future Michigan” and failed Senate candidate John James’ campaign. Reports on the new FEC complaint have detailed how James’ former campaign manager and top strategist Tori Sachs began as executive director of Better Future Michigan on June 1, 2019 – 11 days before the group was publicly incorporated and just 6 days before James launched his Senate campaign – after being on James’ payroll in May 2019. The timeline strongly suggests Tori Sachs illegally set up this pro-James dark money group on James’ behalf.

James and Sach’s outfit Better Future Michigan previously came under fire after it was reported that Sachs failed to follow the FEC’s 120-day cooling off period rules after joining the dark money group and subsequently running attack ads smearing Senator Gary Peters. Recent reports also revealed that James’ campaign and Better Future Michigan  used the same media buyer and the same digital consulting firm and that Better Future Michigan’s affiliated Super PAC was entirely funded with almost $1 million from the family of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

Here’s what others are saying:

MIRS: D’s Allege Illegal Ties Between James, Pro-James Group

“The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) is making the case that BFM Executive Director Tori SACHS “inadvertently revealed” that she “illegally established” the nonprofit BFM as an agent for James days after leaving his campaign. As a result, the MDP has filed a complaint with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) demanding an investigation.”

“The Michigan Democratic Party has made an FEC complaint against an outside group called Better Future Michigan. The group has many, many ties with John James’ campaign, and has gotten lots and lots of money from the infamous DeVos family. They haven’t spent much on digital ads yet, but we’ll keep an eye out if they survive the coming legal hurdles.

The Daily Beast: The Michigan Senate Race Has Become A Sh*t Show Legal Drama

“The allegations are now at the center of an FEC complaint filed by Michigan Democrats against Sachs, BFM, and the James campaign on Tuesday. “Based on the available evidence, it appears likely that John James, through his agent, Tori Sachs, illegally established a dark money entity that is raising and spending funds outside of the federal contribution limits, source restrictions and reporting requirements to support James’ election campaign in plain violation” of federal law, the complaint alleges.”

Gongwer: State Dems File FEC Complaint Against James, Consultant

“Multiple FEC complaints have now been filed against the James campaign during the current cycle.”

The Michigan Democratic Party launched to hold the failed U.S. Senate candidate accountable for his positions – including those made over the course of the 2018 campaign that he then tried to delete after losing that campaign. Since announcing he’d run again, just over six months after his last failed bid, James has been hiding from Michigan voters and refusing to answer questions from Michigan media.
