John James Revealed: John James Gets Grilled on Health Care, Fumbles On How to Protect Michiganders with Pre-Existing Conditions

When pushed to answer questions on health care position James goes on defense with empty rhetoric, right-wing talking points

James supports GOP tax law which paved the way for Trump-GOP lawsuit to dismantle Michiganders’ health care

In case you missed it, failed politician John James got grilled on his health care positions and failed to articulate solutions on how to protect Michiganders with pre-existing conditions.

“But you say that you’ve wanted to repeal Obamacare, and yet at the same time, you say that you’re in favor of protecting people with pre-existing conditions. A lot of people have come to believe that those two things cannot exist at the same time.” — Devin Scillian WDIV [6/28/20]

James has vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act – calling it a “monstrosity” and saying he’d “work [his] tail off” to remove it. When pushed to reconcile his position by WDIV, James simply ripped off right-wing talking points and made misleading claims that he would protect people with pre-existing conditions despite his support for Republicans’ agenda that would take away those protections.

Trump and Republicans are in court to overturn the law and dismantle health care for millions of Americans in the middle of a pandemic and do not have a plan to replace the law and have no alternative that would cover pre-existing conditions at the same level as the Affordable Care Act.

In fact, the Trump administration’s brief in the Supreme Court lawsuit uses the 2017 GOP tax law as the legal basis to take away health care. According to a Washington Post analysis, they argued “that every Republican who voted for the tax cuts three years ago knowingly voted to destroy the 2010 law in its entirety.” James says he supports the Republican tax giveaway and called it a “big beautiful Trump economic rocket ship” even as it paved the way to overturn the law which protects 1.7 million Michiganders with pre-existing conditions.

“John James is desperately attempting to rewrite his toxic health care record, but the fact is that he has no plan to protect Michiganders with pre-existing conditions,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Despite his empty promises, James is “2000%’ with Trump and Washington Republicans as they work to take away Michiganders’ health care in the middle of a pandemic.”

The Michigan Democratic Party launched to hold the failed U.S. Senate candidate accountable for his positions – including those made over the course of the 2018 campaign that he then tried to delete after losing that campaign. For the first year of his campaign, James was largely in hiding from Michigan press and voters to try to paper over his out-of-touch record, and has only come out of hiding after facing scrutiny from Michiganders.
