“John James in the past has said similar things – that he’s his own person, so on and so forth. But that’s not what we remember from 2018.” — Kyle Melinn, MIRS Podcast [5/12/20]
As new reports surface detailing how failed politician John James tried to distance himself from President Trump in a private meeting with African American community leaders, Michigan media is weighing in on James’ failed attempt to reposition himself behind closed doors and mislead voters, after years of promising “2000%” support for Trump.
The new reports come on the one-year anniversary of James getting caught deleting hundreds of videos after his last failed Senate race, and as James faces “hurdles” as Trump advisors see Michigan as a “trouble spot” where the “president’s popularity has ebbed.” And as James was caught “trying to have it both ways,” he was forced to do his first newspaper interview in over 230 days to clean up his mess and backpedal saying “I’ve been saying the same thing for years” and that he “supports the President.”
Michigan press wasn’t buying it, noting, “that’s not what we remember from 2018.”
Here’s what they’re saying about James getting caught AGAIN trying to mislead Michiganders on his record:
Kyle Melinn: Now for us, here in Michigan, who remember 2018, it seemed like him wrapping himself around and being behind [Trump] 2000%, as he said at one point, which is probably one of his chief selling points.
John Reurink: Look, he’s tied himself in a gordian knot to a president who is presiding over one of the largest jumps in unemployment. We’ve already lost 80,000 people to COVID. The forecast, if you’re following the modeling, suggests by the fall that we could be at over 150,000 people or more who will have passed away from COVID-19. Donald Trump is going to be radioactive by the fall and I think John James and his campaign consultants realized that…. That they’ve got a candidate who has got pictures of himself in the Oval Office in Trump, if there’s any chance at all for John James to prevail, he has to try to start hacking at that knot.
Kyle Melinn: John James in the past has said similar things – that he’s his own person, so on and so forth. But that’s not what we remember from 2018.
Jack Spencer: For some reason, if for some miraculous reason in August the administration of Donald Trump can come out and say “we’ve developed a vaccine, and we’re going to have it to everybody by October 15, and we’re all having parties by the end of October, lawn parties with our neighbors and street parties,” Donald Trump won’t be radioactive, right? I don’t think that’s gonna happen. And I think John James and his people recognize that. And that Michigan doesn’t look very good for Donald Trump right now. He only won it by 10,000 votes last time, and I think it’s gonna be much worse for Republicans this cycle around as it was in 2016, and maybe even worse for Republicans than it was in 2018.
The Michigan Democratic Party launched JohnJamesRevealed.com to hold the failed U.S. Senate candidate accountable for his positions – including those made over the course of the 2018 campaign that he then tried to delete after losing that campaign. Since announcing he’d run again, just over six months after his last failed bid, James has been hiding from Michigan voters and refusing to answer questions from Michigan media.
